Travel medical insurance for Canadians travelling abroad

Travel medical FAQ

What is travel medical insurance?
It is emergency medical coverage for unexpected illness or injury while you are travelling — either a Canadian resident going abroad, or a visitor in Canada. It focuses on emergency healthcare costs, not trip cancellation or lost baggage.
Doesn't my provincial health plan cover me abroad?
Very little. Provincial plans like OHIP typically reimburse only a small fraction of out-of-country medical costs, if any. A serious medical event abroad can cost far more than the plan returns, which is why travel medical insurance is recommended for any trip outside Canada.
Single-trip or multi-trip?
A single-trip plan covers one journey; a multi-trip (annual) plan covers many trips up to a maximum length each over a year. If you travel more than two or three times a year, an annual plan is often better value. See single-trip vs multi-trip.
Are pre-existing conditions covered?
Often, if they are stable for the plan's required period. The rules mirror visitor insurance: stability windows vary by insurer and age. An advisor can match you to a suitable plan.
